On the subject of spreader lights and steaming lights. Spreader lights absolutely ruin you night vision and since most of my night sailing is in coastal waters I would never ever use them. I do have a clip on flashlight with a red lens which I use at night.
Since the steaming light is not required for our size boats I would eliminate that for the same reason. If you do mount a steaming light make sure it does not shine on deck and reflect back to the helmsman. Preserve that night vision. Never use the steaming light with sails up for the same reason - it is illegal and ruins night vision.
