Hi Joe, You are right, you did see steel punchings. Somewhere on the same site: www.MSOG.org you will find reference as to when the M15 & M17 changed over from steel to lead. My 1992 M17 was lead in the keel housing. Someone else will have to chime in to let you know when the change occurred. Then again, if you are buying new, that certainly wont be a worry as they are all, as Bob said, lead.
To note, some of the boats that have had keel housing problems were fresh water craft. If you are going to buy used, and get into the steel years, you may wish to visit Sean Mulligan's site where he did a photo documentary of changing the keel housing weights.
