I used the factory hitch.
Fuel economy when towing over the Cascade mountains and back was about  
15 mpg as I recall. That depends somewhat on speed and terrain, of  
course. On the flat the boat has more windage than the Forester, so  
higher speeds will likely suck up the fuel. I usually tow at 60-65 mph  
if the speed limit allows; I may slow down a little this year!
