I have had Beckson and other manufacturers deck plates installed on a couple of boats - They are strong enough to support standing - pushing (hiking) in the 4" versions. Only problem I have seen is when you get up to the jumbo (6'+ sizes) and they are exposed to mucho UV. If someone was 'really bored - they could laminate a small Dorade box for the vent and keep it in place 24/7. A great winter project there. Please think 20 times before cutting a 4" hole in your boat. If you use the right size hole saw (recommended over saber saw type) they are nearly as strong as the deck they replace. I am installing a 4"er with 'booty bag' in my Sunfish tomorrow. Allows me access to hiking straps, daggerboard trunk, storage and I guess I will have ventilation 'down below' ! LOL. GO. LB/GF! They also seem pretty stable on decks where people can walk all over them...
