Spielberg seems to compare favourably with David Lean for me: both show a love of Boys Own heroics; each are obsessed with chronicling their own Empires; both have been heavily criticised from critics; both court controversy through political incorrectness in their films with aplomb.
Most of all - in both I see the highly unfashionable stance of total cinema in that every moment counts to the importance of the thrilling the audience. Spielberg has acknowledged Lean's influence on him - so maybe Lean was the Spielberg of his day?
