i agree, greg..
hopefully susan boyle can rides this wave, whether it be a long or
short run, and enjoy whatever success she can acquire. the pressure
may ease up a bit now, hopefully. i watched the final results clip
and then went back and watched her first performance again. she was
strong and confident, marching out that first time, swaying her hips
and just doing her thing, which was amazing. i loved how she stomped
the floor when Cowell gave her the 3rd "yes." she was relaxed and
without that pressure. if you watch the interview portion before she
went onstage, in that initial appearance, she said, "I'm going to
make that audience rock." and so she did.
during the final, you could see the how posed, restrained and stiff
she was. you know the stage people and director told her where to
stand, for her NOT to move (so the halo light wouldnt blind the
camera..lol).. and after weeks of good and bad comments in the world
press, it got to her. hopefully, this rather simple lady will enjoy
this run and not let it beat her down. a good agent or PR
spokesperson is in order, no doubt.

And into the fray steps G.D.....
Carrie Underwood has a fantastic voice, but I would rather give
oral pleasure to Oprah Winfrey than listen to Modern Pop Country,
which, as a genre of music, makes me break out in itchy, pus-
spewing hives. Underwood has a first-class set of pipes but is
using them to sing, in THIS man's opinion, crap music. Shame on
her. Give me Billy Joe Shaver or Kasey Chambers for country with
balls (or in Chambers' case, ovaries. Her "Barricades and Brick
Walls" tune makes me think about every psychotic ex-girlfriend I
ever dated.).
Kellie Clarkson is nowhere near the singer that Underwood is, she's
gotten fat and weird, but I love her early, dumb teen rock singles.
It's crap, but to moi, it's GREAT crap. It makes me act like Tom
Cruise dancing around in his underwear in "Risky Business" (I know,
TMI!). It's pure junk, but it's junk that moves me, kind of like
the musical equivalent of an Ed Wood film.
Susan Boyle? I hope she makes a lot of money, very quickly. She'll
need it to pay for that prolonged stay in the mental institution
she's destined for after dealing with the music business for a
couple of years. Give me a call, Susie-sweetie-baby-cookie. We need
to talk.
In the end, arguing about music with somebody is like trying to
teach a pig to dance; it's frustrating for you, and it's annoying
to the pig. That being said, I still love to do it, and I will be
hurt and confused for weeks if Rich doesn't send me a personal e-
mail with the subject "Kellie Clarkson Stinks!"
Back to movies...I saw "Up!" yesterday, and it's not just another
home run for Pixar, it's a grand slam. Funny, moving, and there are
lots of visual references to other films and pop images, the most
obvious being the "King Kong" Empire State Building scene and the
classic painting you see everywhere of dogs playing poker. I can't
imagine anyone but the most curmudgeonly, fault-finding naysayer
not liking this one.

hi judith,
Regardless of rich's opinions on who the most listen to and who
stinks.. one has to remember, this is only one guy's opinion, is
not founded in fact, and would mean little to anyone who enjoys
any of the artists he commented on.
Underwood is primarily a country artist... and there are MANY who
do not listen to this kind of music (just there are many that
dont listen to pop, rap, jazz, classical etc).
kelly clarkson, in my opinion, has a voice perfectly suited to
the type of music she sings and does not stink. she's had many
hits on the soft rock and pop charts and has a vibrant charisma
(as does Underwood).

the only Idol winner I think anybody really listens to is
Carrie
Underwood who is a fabulous singer
Kelly Clarkson stinks
Ruben Stoddard is blase
Fantasia is forgotten
Taylor Hicks was poorly managed
etc etc etc
but Carrie Underwood is fabulous & has a long career ahead

Hello
I think what this thread needs is a good dose of
(youngish)
blood and reality. Forget Susan Boyle now and beat the
rest of the pack by a few months. Who listens to Kelly
Clarkson? The joke is on anybody who thinks this is real
talent and (insert favourite deity/celebrity here) help us
if the Martians invade and hold these examples up as
Earth's premium cultural exports. What has happened to
our
tastes? Are we really that lazy?
Please, dear world, avert your gaze from these shows and
invest your time and money supporting actually talented
singers and songwriters rather than glitzed-up amateurs
doing poorly executed covers of songs by, often,
talented and forgotten people. Disregard the outcomes
and the
fickle fancies and support people who are worth investing
in and need it badly at this time in the music
industry. There is a ton of talent out there but you
have to dig a
bit and realize that it is not going to get to you as
easily as your cable set-up and exposure on today's
commercial radio is also pathetic and near nil for great
talent and congested with crap, just like the current
cinema climate.
If you must meet me halfway, go with the new Camera
Obscura
album as they're Scottish and fantastic. I am
available as
a tutor in the field of challenging and rewarding
contemporary music but I do not come cheap.
Yours for the asking,

the dance group, Diversity, is a flash in the pan act
(i just watched them and the final results clip on

because of the world wide attention Boyle received,
(and talk about pressure), along with a pending
recording contract, her name and voice will live on
long after the 50-100 members of Diversity have gone
their separate ways.

Bruce, I couldn't agree with you more! She may

the
show, she acted a tiny bit like a nervous
teen-ager rather than a nervous 47-year-old.
But
I thought she was extremely gracious when the
winner was announced. And while I didn't hear
the winning group perform, it would be difficult
to convince me that they were better than Susan.
Susan didn't really lose,
however. She made more
of a splash around the world than anyone has on
that show. And I believe Simon Cowell is giving
her a recording contract with his record
company. I for one can't wait to buy her first
CD. Happy summer to all MOPOers! Judith

Susan Boyle losing
Is it just me, or did anyone else think
Susan
Boyle conducted herself really nicely during
losing? I liked how she handled herself
before, during and after her last
performance, and when they announced the
winner. It was almost as though someone had
coached her in exactly what to say and do.
And the winners
left me cold. They remind me
of those guys (Stomp?) who make music with
trash can lids. A little of that goes a long
way with me.
