One thing for MD, one for Kevin:

The relationship of MH to Nazism has been discussed at length by various
authors. Just for the record, a Web resource is for example
http://www.haberarts.com/heidnazi.htm.

As far as I know, the argument of adherence to Nazi regime has been used against
MH's philosophy mainly by "thinkers" who had no clue about his theories, to
justify the a-priori rejection of something they probably simply didn't want to
bother to read.

Again, while Kevin's attitude has provoked personal (counter-)attacks, the
bottom line is that, at least due to the *relevant* number of thinkers over the
world that consider MH among the 2 or so most important philosophers of this
century, I see no reason why one shouldn't be at least curious about what
"Kevin's idol" thought.

To Kevin, on the other hand: Pirsig never claimed to have read all relevant
philosophers. He had what he considered a good philosophical idea, and he had it
expressed in terms that could reach almost to the man in the street (which is
certainly not the case of MH). He was probably interested in reaching common
people with a message that he had found was good; not to enrich institutional
western philosophy. Consider the (various) reasons why he could have chosen to
write a novel about a man creating a philosophy, rather than a philosophical
essay. It is apparent that he mentioned past philosophers just to describe how
their thought helped his idea take shape. Those he hadn't read simply had no
part in the story, and so they're out of it.

as I see it
