Tammy, What I think is that we really can't know what is going on in a child's mind. But I can speak for myself:
When I am not fake reading (and yes, I can do that too), I understand what I am reading silently much more than what I am reading aloud. That's if all things are equal, of course, and I am equally engaged. But that's just me.
