It does sound like it might be auditory. I may have missed an earlier post...is he currently in speech? I would suggest going back to the beginning of the spectrum and work on letter-sound correspondence, rhyming, isolating sounds, etc., and go onto the phonics piece. I know there are some publishers who make phonetic books for older children. Reading aloud stories on topics he enjoys, would also be a great model for him. Hang in there! :)
