I have never really "got" phonics. When my students have to sort words into categories based on their phonics rules I always have to a colleague tell me the answer. I obviously did not learn to read this way...and I have two college degrees.

Whole language includes phonics instruction. 

Phonics instruction is part of whole language teaching. 

Whole language teachers teach phonics as part of their language program.
