You place a short, provocative text or visual (generally enlarged) in the 
middle of poster paper (or a sheet of big tablet paper).  Each member of the 
conversation team had a different colored pen/marker/pencil.  They are 
generally given some sort of thinking prompt and asked to notate the text.  
When one member of the group has a question or comment on another's post, he or 
she draws a stem and poses their question or makes their comment. It is a 
variation on written conversation that results in a web, rather than a linear 
text.  Generally members are soon chomping at the bit and when oral 
conversation follows, it tends to be richer.
