I think the change in the kindergarten curriculum is too advanced, in my humble opinion. Gone are the days of learning through play and rest/nap time after lunch. Developmentally, I think it is too much. We are requiring our children to become more academic too early and in my opinion that is not a benefit. I specifically chose a kindergarten in a private school for my own children-- private school offered "centers" approach, public school has reading/math groups, both programs were full day but the private school offered a rest time for children in the afternoon, and when I inquired about rest time in the public school I was advised that "we just don't do that here". I fail to understand why it is so important for children to do test prep on the Kindergarten level. Again, this is my own personal opinion. My child is in kindergarten and just turned four and it was a really hard adjustment for her. The first two months it was really hard. All of a sudden though she loves it. She is doing really well in every area except fine motor. I was held back for the same fine motor stuff. It was a disaster for me when I was in 5th grade to be a year older than everyone else. I didn't want her to go through what I did. I still am not sure I made the right choice. She is with gigantic 6 year olds. Most private schools require you be a year older and developmentally it makes sense unless you are the oldest. We will have to wait and see. -----Original Message----- From: bigstuffs3 <bigstuf...@yahoo.com> To: Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Email Group <mosaic@literacyworkshop.org> Sent: Sun, Nov 7, 2010 4:48 pm Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] Kindergarten entrance age My district did the same thing, but this is only the first (I think...maybe 2nd) year since, so no real info yet.
