A few years ago, there was an excellent article in Reading Teacher about
"Poetry Pals" - I've found that my 5th graders enjoy reading poetry (limited
choice each week) and love the Poetry Cafe we have at the end of the year - yes
it carries over into their reading of fiction and nonfiction text. Some luck
with 6 Minute fluency too - they have an intermediate level text.

At the 6th grade level I found great success using my progress monitoring with
3 trials. For progress monitoring I had to record the first trial results, but
for the students we would look at growth through the three trials. They could
see the goals wcpm and see how much closer they got on their second or third
trial. Their scores did go up - even on that first trial. They felt empowered.
