It is yet another shortcoming in the standards cupport of Nav 4.x:

Editor seems to use the mnemonic character references instead of
numerical references. Nav 4.6 (Mac) has no problem with the equivalent
decimal Unicode references.

(Interestingly, the screenshot with 8-bit alpha doesn't look broken in
Nav 4.x. The alpha channel is dropped with no ugly effects.)

Editor sometimes can't deal with its own pretty printing during
subsequent editing. I think this is one of the known space bugs. I'll
add this issue to the clean up section.
