I agree with Willem that you will likely not be able to link with the
static lib. The error message (though fairly obtuse) is consistent
with that.

If you can use Windows then that may be preferable.

We don't provide instructions on the MPIR website regarding linking
with other projects because there are of course many other projects
that can link against MPIR.

However for most platforms it is trivial to do and needs no
explanation. The Mac seems to occasionally be an exception due to what
I believe are buggy XCode releases. Given that we could not foresee
this particular problem there isn't anything we could have written.
