Since i began this string let me have a word here.
my point in raising the issue was never to impugn the
character of pat born, kathy o'brien, john moir, neil
christenson or anyone else.
what i object to is a lack of transparency and poor
dissemination of information. this is a systemic
problem that takes in media, government, political
parties and yes all of us.
many of us wear several hats on this list. we have our
particular candidates to support and axes to grind and
we often keep them hidden behind curtains of gauze.
presumably we all care about this city and its
citizens, otherwise why participate. i know that's why
i participate.
i fault the system; from strib reporters and editors
who only ever allow parts of stories to appear to the
players at city hall who speak among themselves and
form tidy little cabals to cement their positions.
what is lost in the equation among all this is regular
people who have no voice and yet suffer from the
failures of "the system". this is the real criminality
in all of this; not whether patrick born is a good man
or not. he probably will be a fine finance director.
i have a perfect right to be skeptical. i detest that
i have become so cynical. i believe in government and
its function to act as a progressive force in
civilization.
having said that, there is little i see that
transpires at city hall above the level of civil
service employees that recommends itself to voters.
