Yeah, I've heard some environmentalists vandalize property and put cyanide
in McDonalds, so they're all criminals and wackos, right? I've also heard
some lefties attempt to murder cops, so they're all felons, right?

Point being, we all have things we love and fellow travelers we have to
apologize for - but let's not be too eager to taint a good thing with
hyperbole that only confirms our prejudices. I'm a third-generation baseball
fan, with a 3 1/2-year-old who this very evening was doing his best David
Ortiz impression on our front lawn, and who has received two balls thrown
into the stands by major-league ballplayers (more than his not-as-cute dad
ever received as a kid.)

Baseball is a gas, even at the Metrodome, not because of any corporate b.s.
but because the fans are still, by and large, cool. I've connected with a
higher percentage of "civic-minded" people at a pro ballgame - be it Saints
or Twins - than at damn near any other event in town, including the funky
parades. They stuff my kid full of peanuts and cracker jacks, laugh when he
sings "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" (he knows EVERY word), don't spill beer
on him, and we talk politics and life as the innings roll on. Frankly, the
Twins fans I know and hang out with define "community" as well as any
political movement.

Yeah, there are rock-heads, especially when the "we're-finally-winning"
bandwagon starts rolling and the jerks jump on. But baseball is a great game
with mostly great fans. You can decide whether or not you want to subsidize
it, but major-league baseball is mostly a Good Thing. (And you can see it
for less than an Ani DeFranco ticket.) I love Minneapolis, and yes, the
Twins are one reason (and no, I haven't supported any stadium deal yet).
