i've used 8 MHz for a) higher speed (DCO has only max. 4.8 MHz) of CPU and
peripherals and b) less jitter e. g. for communication over the uarts because 
the 32.768 Hz
are a little less for 9600 or more baud.

The DCO works up to high frequencies. It ties up an I/O pin to get the hgiher frequencies, as you need to attach an external resistor. It certainly isn't limited to 4.8MHz, though.
