Clearly my installation procedure was not correct, though it works well under the 2.4 kernel. My installation script is now in the bit-bucket, where it belongs. You really should put this ebuild in the official Gentoo portage tree. At the very least, a forum post with the URL would be a great kindness to other Gentooists.
