My system is a little more conservative, Gentoo development-sources 
2.6.10-r1, the latest stable "vanilla" 2.6 kernel.

I tried your ebuild, and now - everything works perfectly.

Clearly my installation procedure was not correct, though it works well under 
the 2.4 kernel. My installation script is now in the bit-bucket, where it 
belongs. You really should put this ebuild in the official Gentoo portage 
tree. At the very least, a forum post with the URL would be a great kindness 
to other Gentooists.
