Vibrations from a guitar string produce sound (unless it is in a vacuum)
because the vibration is transmitted by pressure waves through the air -
the key is the transmission by mechanical means. A pickup on an electric
guitar normally responds to the moving magnetic field caused by the
magnetised string vibrating. So the means of transmission is different.
