I see your point. Such a functionality might be great.
But to develop all this security/tunneling (and overall making it "easy") would scare me.

but I am also doing this:
there is an mpd on each machine and there is icecast which streams it to anywhere possible. I simply choose the sonsgs to be streamed from the dedicated server via any client interface.
gmpc offers to store several mpd configurations.

the only difference to your solution is that you need to know where your desired music is located to play it. however an advanced client having connections to multiple servers would probably
do this transparently.

(I would give gmpc a try)

I dont have upload for that, my DSL connection has 256kbit uplink.
Pulseaudio throughtput will be at leas 1387 Kbits.
Thats 5 times more than I could afford.
