That is not good enough. It should show 4 packets for a new lease and 2 
for an extension of the lease. Like:

Jan  3 08:56:34 faramir dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.0.2.31 from 
00:0d:fe:00:1f:5a via eth0
Jan  3 08:56:34 faramir dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.0.2.31 to 00:0d:fe:00:1f:5a via 
eth0
(A new lease should have a DHCPREQUEST and a DHCPOFFER packet in fron of 
this.)

I suggest you look into your filter settings. You may be killing the 
packet on it's way out to the network. (iptables)
