I just choose avi because it's a wrapper extension anyway the actual support is for "*.divx", "*.DIVX", "*.flv", "*.FLV", "*.avi", "*.AVI", "*.wmv", "*.WMV", "*.wma", "*.WMA", "*.mp4", "*.MP4","*.mov", "*.MOV", "*.rm", "*.RM", "*.ogm", "*.OGM; More could be added. I personally don't like the mpeg/mpg idea and auto detection is the best. > Also, I see there is an option to use mplayer, but it only says it for extra > audio types. Can't it be used to play other video types vlc can't support? In theory yes, but the mplayer interface is more of a load on the system, it works sort of like GPBVR, creating a disk file and then streaming an mpeg to the mvpmc. vlc allows on-the-fly transcoding to http saving the disk write and read step.
