I just choose avi because it's a wrapper extension anyway the actual
support is for    "*.divx", "*.DIVX", "*.flv", "*.FLV", "*.avi",
"*.AVI", "*.wmv",
"*.WMV", "*.wma", "*.WMA", "*.mp4", "*.MP4","*.mov", "*.MOV",
"*.rm", "*.RM", "*.ogm", "*.OGM;

More could be added.  I personally don't like the mpeg/mpg idea and
auto detection is the best.

In theory yes, but the mplayer interface is more of a load on the
system, it works sort of like GPBVR, creating a disk file and then
streaming an mpeg to the mvpmc.  vlc allows on-the-fly transcoding to
http saving the disk write and read step.

What file type is causing a problem?
