I believe a PVR-150 (or the PRT-500 dual-tuner version) will have all 
the capabilities you need for a typical MythTV back-end. The PVR-350 has 
video output, which is rarely used these days, and I forget what the 250 
has over the 150.

The other consideration is whether you want to tune in digital channels.

The MythTV wiki has lots of info on tuner cards. Any card with a 
hardware MPEG2 encoder or a digital card should work with mvpmc, though 
digital cards still need the streams transcoded to convert the audio.

I don't think it does, but then again I've never used that aspect of 
MythTV, so I've never noticed its absence.

Others have played ripped DVDs on mvpmc, so it definitely works, but 
probably through the file system, as you speculated.
