Not entirely, no. The analog broadcast contains only the standard
definition version and only the primary channel for each of the
stations. The digital subchannels aren't broadcast in analog. I'm in
central New Jersey and Comcast sends me channels from both New York
and Philadelphia. Each of the PBS stations are really three channels
each, not counting the HD versions. Philadephia's PBS is WHYY,
WHYY-Arts, and WHYY-Info, but only WHYY is broadcast on analog cable.

It sometimes is. It all depends on what your provider is sending to
you. This can vary significantly by channel, time of day, phase of
the moon, and the price of tea in China. Since the HDHR records
whatever is sent verbatim, there's no guarantees about what to expect
for bitrate or codec.

No, I didn't spend too much time on it. I tried it a couple of times
on different recordings and then gave up.

Right. None of the digital capture cards provide anything other than
verbatim digital capture. If you want to transcode, you need to do it
in software. That includes firewire capture as well as the PCI
capture cards.

The HD-PVR does have such settings, but that's not a digital capture device.
