Seems some people have a hard time believing that
turning off ipv6 could be a possible solution to this
problem... I have never faced the problem, and am not
inclined to try to recreate the problem on my PC, but
for the benefit of all doubters (yes YOU, Im talking
about YOU. you know who YOU are), heres the page from
where I picked that stuff...

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=322711&page=2&pp=15

the last post in that thread reads as follows ...

"Had the same problem as originally discribed in this
post - Konqueror would browse sites, but Firefox
wouldn't. Also, neither GAIM or yum could access the
internet (and I'm sure many other programs but I never
checked).

Managed to fix firefox by setting -
'network.dns.disableIPv6' to 'True' in about:config,
but other programs like yum still didn't work.

Totally disabled IPv6 in Fedora as per Simon's earlier
post.

Result - everything now works!

Thanks very much everyone, if yours still doesn't work
after this then good luck getting it sorted.

D"

Now, theres NO human way to guarantee that Rajgopal is
facing the exact same problem (esp since his distro is
different, atleast I think it is), but the 'symptoms'
certainly sound the same, and if nothing else has
worked yet, its time to try out the so-called
'outlandish' workarounds...

Yours Sincerely,
Karthik Raghavan
