OK simple stuff
Did mysql_install_db work ok?
When you do a ps can you see any thing runing?
Are you stating it from the right place?
/use/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysql &
It will be somthing simple so if you just go over stuff it will work...
Than you will be flighing...;o)

I am new to MySQL. I've installed the package under SuSe Linux 7.1
