I'll try this solution before upgrading my system

Yes, but v4 version has been made available.
Actually I'm running 4.0.2

Binary rpms released by the mysql team were working on
my system till v3.23.48. I Hope I'll be able to compile
this new version against glibc 2.1 .

Unfortunately my server 'lives' in another town
