This 'developer' is feeding you some BS. MySQL handles XML data as well as any other type of data. The functioanlity of a particular database has a lot to do with the programmer who designs the schema. Maybe this 'developer' doesn't know how to design an XML/MySQL application ... but that doesn't mean there is a problem with MySQL.
