i've been hesitant to respond because i'm not 
sure that this is a head on solution for you, but 
take a look at http://corereader.com

it's certainly easier to use than access queries. 
simple point and click to build complex output.  

however, it's not designed for the fancy 
formatted output to which your folks are 
accustomed.  it'll do text, browser, schema xml, 
and html, but it's all (intentionally) plain 
vanilla.
