Do check the ownership on /var/lib/mysql if not right, then chown -R mysql /var/lib/mysql I am getting out of ideas here. Would recommend to uninstall all the mysql packages - mysql-server, mysql-client and other you have installed and start afresh. THIS IS not a good advice but If not then just step down to a lower init level turning off the network services and then come back into level 3/5 whatever you are using, depending on platform. Then try to start the server.
