I think you mean the MSP430, not the 432 - the 432 is very new. I've never had any issues with serial comms on any launchpad and I've been using them since day 1 - maybe it's just your system or a duff launchpad, though I've never heard of one of those failing either.
I use mainly Windows, but have used the serial comms to all sorts of devices, from microprocessors to Cisco routers.
