Since 'headroom' is generally acknowledged to the the maximum output before clipping, related to the nominal output level, simply swapping chips will not produce an increased headroom as most swing within a couple of volts of the supply and even so called 'rail to rail' capable chips will only increase the maximum level by about 1 dB maximum. The only way to increase headroom is to increase the supply voltage significantly (6dB increase means doubling the supply which would trash the desk, or if you are meaning increase mix headroom PRE the master fader, then change resistors to 'loose' say 6dB prefader then make it up after, which then gives you ability to control the clip point somewhat.

So recently we did some minor "upgrades" to the master/monitor section of our Elan 2. Just some ideas I picked up on the board. One of the things I thought it would do was give us more headroom. but seems like we kinda lost a little. Heres what we did...

added burr-browns (OPA134 & OPA2134) to the master/monitor section. Also WIMA MKP2 0.1uF polypropylene caps to bypass all the electrolytic coupling caps. also upgraded all 30 or so stock 10uF's. we left those original non-polar caps in place and soldered a 0.1uF MKP2 polypropylene cap in parallel with them.

If anyone has some thoughts on the matter I would love to hear them.
