Hi Jim,
It's been years, but IIRC, you do have to take all of the knobs
off, and then undo the 4-40 socket cap screws on the front panel. It's a
bit of work, but also a fabulous opportunity to clean the front panel
and get it looking good-as-new! Just FYI, if you go ahead with this, and
you get around to testing it before it is fully re-assembled, you must
run a ground connection between the back panel (jackfield) and main
panel before you power it up or it will oscillate.

I replaced them with P&G and have noticed a great deal of response.
The glide ratio is much better and the faders are obviously much
smoother. The caps are a little fatter which I like better. If you
have the money it's a definate upgrade. I remember that swapping them
out is a very simple 3 pin molex connector. Also having the board be
modular in my mind is the first hill to go up with out being modular
it's really really difficult. Either way what ever the time and money
these boards are well worth it. Good luck!
