I appreciate your attention on this.

a) the output into snmpd.conf is from net-snmp-config, it looks the same
as it did for 5.2.3. net-snmp-config reports v5.2.4
b) I'll try your suggestions but I do not link in the UCD mibs, I posted
the net-snmp-config output to Thomas, here it is
host/hr_system
mibII/system_mib
util_funcs
mibII/vacm_conf
mibII/vacm_context
mibII/vacm_vars
snmpv3/usmConf
snmpv3/usmStats
snmpv3/usmUser
snmpv3/snmpEngine
utilities/override
utilities/execute

I am starting the agent as: ./snmpd -Le -f
I actually execute it from within /usr/local/sbin, there is no
difference when specifying the full path.

Thanks,
Adam

Two basic possibilities spring to mind:

   a) There's a typo or similar in the snmpd.conf file
   b) There's something wrong with the snmpd binary

The simplest way to test the first option is probably to copy the
snmpd.conf file onto some other system, and run a default version of the
agent (e.g. a vendor-supplied
binary) against it. If that's happy, then you can safely
concentrate on your new binary.

Thomas has suggested running "net-snmp-config" to check
the options used to compile it. I'd also suggest querying the
value of UCD-SNMP-MIB::versionConfigureOptions.0
Make sure that this does match what you expect.

It might also be worth starting again with a fresh install.
Remove the old agent (and client) binaries, together with
*any* SNMP-related libraries - make sure there's no trace of Net--SNMP
on your system at all.
Then take a clean source tarball, and run configure/make/make install
as before.

One final thought - how exactly are you starting up the agent?
Does it make any difference if you specify a full path to the agent
binary?
