Dave, One more quick question - what is a default build? Is there a configure script available for a default build or should I just not use --with-mibs and --with-out-mibs for the first try? then add/remove MIBs until it breaks?

I was suggesting you checked what was *actually* included in the agent - just in case the two were different. It might also be worth starting with a default build - make sure that behaves as expected. Then start pruning the configuration one chunk at a time, until you either get down to the desired fighting weight - or else you locate the source of the problem.
