You must be talking about an Efficient Networks product. These are what they
call DSL bridges they are supposed to be the "Cheapest" way to access the
Internet Via DSL. They are either self configuring or simple to configure
they provide the user with a Translated IP address via NAT;this product is
termed by the manufacturer to be an "Intelligent Bridge". The IP address you
usually get is an 10.x.x.x number which is not a valid Internet IP address,
this alone should not be a problem if it does address translation properly.
The short comming of this device is that it does not do H.323 well if at
all. You will find you may not even be able to do dialpad.com or if you can
the quality will be poor even compared with same pc with a 56K modem
connection.
You will find that alot of ISP's may resort to such devices to keep their
overhead low and so they do not have to train installers or customer service
reps. But they leave people whom want to use H.323 or Video conferencing out
in the cold.
I would tell my ISP to get me a real modem that is capable of doing H.323.
These are just cheap products which prove the old saying "you get what you
pay for".
