So, then, modify firefox and those other applications to use some new
mechanism to get the right information on Solaris.

Surely, we can't have the _only_ platform to have faced this problem,
can we?

I think that hacking WPAD (or similar protocols) is not the right way
to go.  It just makes it harder for administrators to understand what
Solaris is doing.
