Ah, I had this backwards. Getting this right makes the rest of the conversation
make more sense. I believe Calum said that most gnome applications use gconf.
Is modifying important point applications like firefox for our platform that
difficult? Calum idea of doing it via plugin seems less klugy if doable.
FWIW it was easy to get mozilla 1.7 on my desktop to use the system specified
proxy and then point that at a pac file in my home directory. I then munge
that based on whether I'm VPN'd or not.
