Andrew,

I've offered to help you integrate your driver. Get your code and test 
hardware to me, and I'll work with you on it. Really. (Especially if 
your hardware is 10GBaseT. Note that CX4 is really hard for me, because 
I have no CX4 peers. Fiber is also hard for me to work with, but if 
that's all you have, I'll try to help you out. CX4 is mostly a 
non-starter though, unless you have some other kind of equipment I can 
use as a test peer....)

As for the pain in figuring out kernel sources, well, yeah, its a PITA 
to figure out, but well worth the effort once you've done so.

There are a lot of docs describing the process. Sorry its so byzantine, 
but to a new comer, so is the BSD or Linux stuff. (I recall that the 
trouble to figure out how to do a full NetBSD build was not unlike the 
trouble I went thru figuring out how to do a full ON build.)
