AFAIK it's a server misconfiguration. I had a similiar problem here when I put some ogg files on my server. In the apache config I added ogg to the mp3 ID (you know, to give them an icon).. and all ogg's that were downloaded were seen as mp3's, and renamed that way too. With the iso's I think they are identified as binaries, and maybe on M$ servers thay are given the extention of .exe.
