I may be wrong, but AFAIK: This is because Linux uses the little cable that goes from CDROM to soundcard to play audio CD's. (this means no messing with drivers or anything. the CD is played in a "standalone" mode on the CDROM, and the sound is sent right into the sound card's internal sound input.) Now, for playing MP3, it is a completely different story, since the "MP3 audio" is data that has to be read, processed, and sent thru the system bus to be played by the soundcard.
