[newbie] Virtual Desktop

Greetings from another brand new Linux user (with another duffus question ;-)   Is there a relatively painless way of turning off the expanded virtual desktop area?  I really meant to say no to that option but I must have hit a wrong key.  If I can I'd like to find a less painful way of doing this than going through the whole XF86config.    Thank you all!
