You may have solved this problem by now but, if not, I just had the same
problem (under LM6.1) and fixed it by editing /etc/resolv.conf and
replacing the line "search localdomain" with "search xxx.com"
After doing this, you should be able to ping hostname instead of
hostname.xxx.com.
