Not sure what 'the best way' is, but when I download tar.gz etc files I just stick them in $HOME/download which I made for that. Then I untar the files (tar xfzv for tar.gz-files and tar xfiv for .bz2-files), change to the directory that is made and run ./configure (and hope all libs are present ;-) ./make su (enter root password when prompted) make exit (back to user-shell) $HOME/download is also the place that I put downloaded RPM's in. They are installable from just about anywhere. Just remember to become root (run the su-command) before you attempt to install an RPM-file. Hope this helps a bit.
