Mark, you have a good point about LILO. I will try installing LILO and then
upgrading. Do you know whether LILO will take over nicely from Grub if I
just run LILO?

After I switch to LILO, I shall try the upgrade again.

Just out of curiousity, did you try the xemacs upgrades from MandrakeUpdate?
