That's one thing that I'm pretty sure isn't causing my problem: I've got 
1.2G free, and did scandisk and defrag before starting.

Sounds like enough people have a similar problem (and no clear solution) 
that this may be a 7.1 bug.  Anyone from Mandrakesoft monitoring this board?
