[newbie] Special characters

Can someone tell me how to access special characters, specifically the
upside down ? and the n with the ~ over it as used in Spanish? I was
typing a bunch of ? in a row and accidentally hit a couple other
buttons...an upside down ? came out, and I can't reproduce it!
