DON'T sweat  the newbie of it all.. learning is what we are all here for...
I am no expert, just a newbie trying to repay all the help I have received 
around here too. So if you wind up being a local hero, you have to come back 
here and help out too, OK? I have lurked around here for a while now, and i 
NEVER EVER seen one person get pissed at someone who was trying to get it 
right.
if the service fails at start, that just indicates it is not properly 
configured. it also suggests but does not prove that it is installed. 
When you say "linux tells you", is that info from, as root, in a text console 
typing "ifconfig" (wotq= with out the quotes)?   
have you used webmin? (in a browser "https://1227.0.0.1:10000";) to set up 
Apache?
