I'm am using a LT winmodem(lucent chip) and ltmodem-kv_2.4.8_34.1mdk-6.00b7-1.i586.rpm. it installed a device.. i think using /dev/ltmodem ? linux rpm installers dont tell you much of what they are doing..
 
also.. thanks for refering the basiclinux course. i have signed up for it...

work. If you could supply a little more information; specifically which modem
you are using, which 'rpm' did you use, I might be able to help. There are
